How can I delete all the previous events in the Smart Client’s event list?

The elements in the Alarms list can be acknowledged and deleted, but Events cannot.
Basically, these are the historical events from the server, mostly used for testing and verification.

How does Milestone differentiate between the usage of an alarm and an event? When should we use an alarm and when should we use an event?

Events are an “internal” thing, to allow internal communication between XProtect components (Generic and analytics events can even be sent into XProtect form the outside world).
Alarms are a “user interface” thing, intended to communicate events to an operator in front of a screen.
My answer may not be very precise and not even 100% correct, but it should be suitable to give you an idea what events and alarms are.
