How can i determine if the camera is Indoor or outdoor?

  1. Does XProtect expose a native indoor/outdoor classification field on the camera object (e.g. via device properties, camera group/folder metadata, or a custom attribute), rather than relying on name/description text matching?

  2. If not natively supported, is there a recommended metadata field (tags, custom properties, recording server groupings, etc.) that’s commonly used to tag cameras as indoor/outdoor in XProtect deployments?

  3. Is this distinction something typically configured at the Recording Server or camera-group level rather than per-camera?

There is currently no dedicated Indoor/Outdoor property available for cameras in XProtect.

  • Camera location information can be stored on the Info tab in the Management Client, but there is no built-in field that explicitly identifies a camera as indoor or outdoor.
  • There is no documented standard or generally recommended method in XProtect for storing this classification.
  • If your integration requires this information, one option is to add a custom field through a Management Client plugin. The MIP SDK Admin Tab Plugin sample demonstrates how custom configuration data can be added by developing a Management Client plug-in.
  • Another approach is to organize cameras into Indoor and Outdoor groups and use group membership as the classification method.

I have not found any published survey data or best-practice documentation that indicates how widely these approaches are used.

If others have experience from customer deployments, it would be valuable to hear how indoor/outdoor classification is handled in practice and whether there are additional recommendations.
