Is there a way to edit server retention settings in safe mode?

Is there a way to change the retention settings before Milestone services come online? I have a restored vm that has footage that is too old for the retention setting. I am afraid that when the server boots up, it will realize the time and delete the video I need. Is there a way to boot into safemode and edit the configuration there?

Hi Kenneth,

This is definitely possible but the “how” is different based on the product. If it’s the older product codebase, everything is in the Configuration.xml in the programdata folder. If it’s the newer codebase, the settings are in the Surveillance SQL database, and you’d want to update the settings there, then ALSO delete the offline configuration files on the recording server in [C:\programdata\milestone\xprotect](file:C:/programdata/milestone/xprotect) recording server\offline

However, it might be better/safer to either remove the storage and access the data from a separate physical server, or start the server in safe mode and access the data “offline” using Smart Client Player.

I apologize, I forgot to mention that this would be Milestone 2017R3 XProtect Expert.

This is a special project server, and what I am doing is exporting the footage. Once done, the camera will be deleted until needed again.

If I bring the server up in Safe Mode, will that prevent Milestone from trimming the footage while I adjust the settings?

I also restored a copy of the mediadatabase directory to another server. Could I use the Smart Client Player to export the footage?

Thank you very much for lending your expertise.

Thanks,

Ken Thompson

Hi Ken,

Yes you can use Smart Client Player to open the media database directly. I recommend doing that as there’s less risk of losing data.

In the left side panel, you can click on the grey database icon and use the dialog to navigate to the location of the media database files. You can then add one camera at a time from that media database, compose a view of one or more cameras, and playback video. You can also export data from there into all supported formats (DB/AVI/MKV)

Cheers,

Very nice.

Thanks!
