If a MIP plugin on the management client were to enable reception of a video stream directly from a camera, can it connect this received stream to the Smart Client decode/display functionality so as to live view this stream.

The Milestone design is that the only component that talks with the camera is the recording server. I believe it is a robust design.
To summarize: It is impossible to feed any video stream to Smart Client live view for display, unless the stream originates from the recording server. Is this right?
Yes.
Technically you can build a plug-in that does anything, but Smart Client camera views uses the the recording server and the recording server owns the camera.
