Reducing archived video file quantity

The client has a single, large archiving location via an SMB share. They are looking for options to reduce the quantity of files. In order to do this, I would suggest increase the <precreate_sizes> and <max_bytes_in_block_files> keys withing the recorderconfig.xml from 16MB to 32MB or even 64MB. What are the pros/cons to do something like this? Are there any other keys that need to be modified to increase the .blk file size to lower file quantity? What other performance/stability issues may arise from something like this?
