I am using MetaDataGPS example to save metadata and MetaDataPlayback example to read that metadata and I have noticed that metadata are saved only when video from that camera is saved, is this true?
I would like to be able to save only the metadata so they can be displayed on a heat map. For example, Axis Object Analytics is exporting rtsp metadata stream with detected person data inside that stream. I would like to extract that person location and save it, and eventually create a heat map of a certain area.

This is an issue pertaining to configuration.
The default setup is that cameras record on motion, and when recording it will also record on related devices.
The way I read it you simply want the metadata device to record always. The easiest way to achieve that is to add a new recording rule looking a little like this..
