Smart Client – web application integration

Hello,

I would appreciate your advice regarding web application integration in XProtect Smart Client 2026 R1. It seems that I may be missing the intended integration approach.

The attached image shows what I would like to achieve in Smart Client. It is a screenshot from Axis Camera Station Pro showing video streams together with a web application. The web application is our ACAP running directly on an Axis PTZ camera.

The scenario is:

  1. Axis Object Analytics detects a person and sends the detection over the LAN to the Axis PTZ camera.

  2. ACAP on the PTZ camera places the detection on the map and checks it against user-defined areas. If the relevant conditions are met, acap raises an alarm and directs the PTZ camera to track the object.

  3. AOA on the PTZ camera then performs a second, independent detection to confirm the object and to reduce the number of false alarms. Further actions depend on the user-defined configuration.

I tested the built-in Web Page functionality in Smart Client, but it does not display the application as a current standard browser such as Chrome, Edge or Opera does.

What is the recommended and supported way to integrate a web application like this into Smart Client 2026 R1? Is the new microfrontend platform intended for this purpose, and is there an example project that demonstrates the recommended approach?

There are currently three approaches you can consider:

  1. The built-in Web Page functionality in Smart Client. As you noted, this is a legacy approach and has some limitations.
  2. A custom web page integration approach. The option suggested by Christoph is one possible implementation depending on your requirements.
  3. A Micro Frontend (MFE) application. This is the recommended forward-looking approach for extending Smart Client functionality. You can find documentation on how to develop an MFE app for the Milestone Smart Client in the Developer Portal. The portal is currently in beta and is available only to partners enrolled in the Pilot Partner Program.

It is the MFE approach that we are currently struggling with. Our main reason for asking was to confirm the recommended path and whether there was something we had overlooked.

We are part of the beta test program, so we will look into it in more detail.
