XProtect Essential+, basic authentication fails

Hi all,

I’m having some authentication problems with a Essential+ 2017 R3 installation. Current setup is as follows:

External port 44444 forwarded to port 80 of Milestone server.

External port 55555 forwarded to port 8081 of Milestone server.

External port 55556 forwarded to port 8082 of Milestone server.

From an external network, Milestone Mobile and the WebClient are working fine, with the same credentials I try to use in SmartClient.

However SmartClient with “basic authentication” is giving the error “Failed to logon, check your username or password”.

Remote access is enabled in the manager application/recording server, including the external port 44444. When I do a Wireshark trace on the Milestone server I see the following events:

When I browse to http://externalip:44444 > IIS welcome page displays

When I browse to http://externalip:44444/installation > client installation page displays.

I’ve read in the documentation “basic authentication” only works with https/443. I’ve tried forwarding external port 44444 to 443. Then I’m still able to visit the IIS/client installation page through https, but the SmartClient fails on “check server details”.

I used to work a lot with essential/expert/professional until 2013. I never had problems with this setup. Did something change in the authentication structure?

Seems my wireshark screenshot is not there:
