With XProtect version 2019R3 a new feature was introduced:
--
Improved Device and Password Management
Besides expanding the list of supported devices, a new scheduler allows system administrators to set the exact time intervals device passwords should be changed, making device password changes easier and fully automated.
--
This feature is not supported by the MIP SDK.
You can change the password for the device on the XProtect by using the Configuration API, as you have already mentioned. For changing password on the device, you might be able to find methods documented by the various camera vendors, but you will find no functionality for this in the MIP SDK.
@Rie Kiuchi (Milestone Systems) thanks!
Can you point me to the documentation for “Besides expanding the list of supported devices, a new scheduler allows system administrators to set the exact time intervals device passwords should be changed, making device password changes easier and fully automated.” ?
To refer Milestone Help page - press F1 key - might be helpful for you if you have questions while you are using XProtect. For example, while you are doing Move Hardware and open Move Hardware dialog and press F1 key, then you will be able to see help page related to the topic.
@Rie Kiuchi (Milestone Systems) thanks a lot! good idea about F1.
You made me discover we can now upgrade firmwares that way! That’s very nice. I guess there’s also no support for that in the SDK?
No, this is not supported by MIP SDK.
@Rie Kiuchi (Milestone Systems) I installed 2020R3 using a test license and “Update firmware” is not present when I right click a recorder/hardware (https://doc.milestonesys.com/2020R3/en-US/standard_features/sf_mc/sf_mcnodes/sf_2serversandhardware/mc_hardware.htm?cshid=1001#Updatefirmwareonhardwaredevices)
Do you have an idea why? This test install only has one Axis camera.
One possible explanation is that the feature, “Device password management”, requires XProtect Professional+, XProtect Expert or XProtect Corporate.
If you are testing with XProtect Express+ or XProtect Essential+ the feature is not supported.

If this does not explain your observation please ask the Support Community. You will get better help there, Developer Forum has a focus on development work using the MIP SDK while Support Community can provide help and advise troubleshooting features like the “Device password management”.
Sorry I should have specified: of course this is with corporate.
Based on your advice I asked on the support community https://supportcommunity.milestonesys.com/s/question/0D53X00007fL2J6SAK/2020r3-corporate-missing-upgrade-firmware?language=en_US
