We have built a Plugin for Milestone XProtect, and one of our customers is planning to upgrade from 2023 R1 to the latest version which is 2024 R2. We just wanted to make sure whether the plugin integration will get affected or not?
It should be safe to upgrade the XProtect VMS, integrations and plugins should continue to work in the newer XProtect unaltered.
There is very few exceptions, and these are when Milestone have made breaking changes, these happen very seldom and are announced in good time in the MIP SDK Release Notes.

You can find all the release notes between 2023R1 and 2024R2.
If you want to make absolutely sure you can test. If your plugin is a Smart Client plugin you can just test with a newer Smart Client, for other types of plugin you would need to test with a new or upgraded XProtect installation. If you are a Milestone partner you might have test licenses available.
